The Science of Learning Research Centre recently hosted the 2017 International Science of Learning Conference – Research to Reality from the 18th to the 20 September, 2017 including a 2-day research conference on the Science of Learning and a 1-day public forum on Wednesday 20 September held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, Brisbane, Australia.

The conference was a unique opportunity for cognitive and brain researchers, educational researchers, and neuroscientists to present and share their latest research findings into the science for learning and for education, to discuss what these findings mean across the respective disciplines from cognitive and brain research to education, and to consider the challenge of how these findings may be applied in learning and education.

The program featured international Keynote and Invited Speakers including:

  • Professor John Hattie, The University of Melbourne
  • Professor Nancy Law, The University of Hong Kong
  • Professor Roberto Lent, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro

  • Dr Johan Mårtensson, Lund University
  • Senator the Hon. Simon Birmingham, Minister for Education and Training

The conference included Symposium Sessions on research programs from laboratory-based brain sciences to application in education practice or policy, as well as Oral and Poster presentation sessions on the Science of Learning from neuroscience, psychology, and education perspectives.

 

Program themes:

Understanding Learning – neuroplasticity, brain development, memory formation and consolidation, attention and perception, language, higher order cognition

Readiness for Learning – Social and emotional development, student well-being, anxiety, the learning environment, student engagement, family engagement, student and community identity

Promoting and Measuring Learning – a collaborative approach, technology and digital learning environments, curriculum development, assessment and learning, model and impact of feedback, confusion and error, social interaction in learning
